All apps fit into one of two categories: Entertain or Organize

Testing this post in Medium, mainly because I like the ability for readers to be able to comment each paragraph, rather than just the entire post.

Level Up - Creativity: Revamp Old Ideas

A thought just occurred to me, how am I going to describe the next game I create?

One requirement would have to be that the description entices visitors to download the game and try it..

So, I could try to be original, which I usually do try to do.. Or, a new strategy occurred to me: be original within the bounds of what people already know about.

Here's a few descriptions for new games off the top of my head:
- Bomberman, without the bombs.
- Flappy Bird, but you're a fish, and underwater, avoiding nasty underwater cactus.
- Flappy Bird + Bomberman = Try to blow up pixel birds.
- Pong, but one player and no computer opponent.
- Side-scrolling shooter

Maybe these aren't the most creative ideas, but they can work. For more creativity, assumption reversal usually works better. Post coming soon. ;)

Structure Allows Spontaneity and Creativity

Having structure in your life allows you to worry less about the menial aspects of daily tasks. For example, you don't have to spend time thinking when you are going to do something if you already have a specific time for it. By not wasting any precious brain power on the menial tasks, it opens up space and time to use the brain for higher functionality.

My Two Cents.

~ Danial Goodwin ~

ps - Originally not planned for this post, a great example of this concept being put into practice will come from Google. They do all the menial tasks for their employees, including food, laundry, baby sitting, gym, transportation, and more. This may seem like it costs a lot to have, but if you consider the well-being of the employees (less sick days) and while at work employees can put their full minds onto the work, rather than having any nagging sensation, like what/where to eat, how the kids are doing, or even transportation worries (Google shuttles/buses).

Stupidity Doesn't Mean Not Creative

"Stupidity" does not mean not creative. Intelligence-challenged (read: "dumb") individuals have the ability to uniquely think outside the box. They may be less knowledgeable about current paradigms (also read "facts") or they may not be limited by current paradigms at all. This leads to a different set of experiences for the individual to draw conclusions upon.

I bring this up [finally] because I like to think of all possible solutions and know how people think (Developers/Designs: Great for creating use-cases). Also, I believe creativity is very important in life. It helps us come up with solution to problems we've never seen before.

I have at least six other posts on creativity at the time of this writing.

Brainstorming - The Bad Idea Theory

Imagine you are in a group trying to brainstorm. One of the worst things that could happen is nobody talking and each person thinking that another is going to come up with the great idea . There are a few ways to get around this:

First, the overall premise for creativity is divergent, then convergent thinking; First, one must expand their thinking, then follow up with narrowing down the many different ideas/tangents to something to act upon.

Method A - Use the Bad Idea Theory. Another person calls it the McDonald's Theory. Basically, when nobody has any ideas, one should suggest a really bad idea. After that, ideas will magically be thought of by others. Others in the brainstorming group will know that whatever they say can't possibly be any worse than what was first said.

Method 1 - Think individually, collectively. This method involves paper and pencil. Everybody starts off with a blank sheet of paper. The idea is for everybody in the group to write down at least three "random" things related to the topic at hand, then pass the paper to the left. Then, the next person should expand on whatever is written down on the paper. Continue passing all the papers around until all have written on it, then continue talking about each of the papers as a group. This method has the benefits of thinking solo and thinking as a group. Though, it may take a little longer, good ideas are worth it.

Method a - Round robin. Or whiteboard. Typical case, there should be a "leader" of the pack which specifically asks each person what they are thinking so that everybody contributes. Each person has had different experiences in their life. This is the most common because it is the easiest.

What are some other group brainstorming ideas?

May the 6th be with you, (you can think of a better exit line than that? VSRNE,)

I'm a Procrastinator, That's Why/How I Get So Much Done

Let me say it again, I'm a procrastinator, that's why/how I get so much done.

I'll explain...

I'm all about efficiency and productivity, but recently I've come to the realization that productivity doesn't just have to be about learning new things and writing more code. It can include hanging out with friends and exercise. I was about to write relaxing also, but, to me, learning and producing code is the same thing as relaxing.

Procrastination is putting something off until later.

..an extension of that...

Productive Procrastination is doing something worthwhile while procrastinating.

Feel free to define worthwhile any way you choose. Probably not regretting the event would be one minimum requirement of worthwhile.

One example that I gave in a speech recently was about watching The Walking Dead. If you really enjoy watching The Walking Dead and want to keep up with it every week, then that is productive procrastination. If you watch the next show afterwards just because it looks cool or interesting, then you are procrastinating. When you watch even more shows after that just because you don't want to move or change the channel, then you are being lazy.

Being lazy and being a procrastinator are two completely different things.

I procrastinate some work because it is not as intriguing as other work that I eventually would have to do anyways.

As long as I'm always doing something, then I can be fine with that. It doesn't always have to be the most urgent or important thing.

You always hear about people saying to stop procrastinating and that you should never procrastinate. But, I'm here to tell you that you should procrastinate [and need] to procrastinate.

Sometimes, you just have to have fun and enjoy yourself, enjoy life; And, forget about all other things you have to do for a little while.

If you can think of two things that you have to do, then you must procrastinate one over the other. You typically can't do two things at once (multitask); You can only switch between the tasks very fast so that it seems like you are doing two things at once. But, that is for another post.

You are going to procrastinate.

Procrastination creates time and motivation. You are highly motivated to not do something, so much that you'll do your taxes. Or people who procrastinate their taxes will enjoy a clean and organized room. There are many more examples that I don't feel like getting into.

Use can use what other people consider a flaw to your advantage.

When you are working on a project and feel you are going nowhere, get up from the desk and procrastinate productively. Get something done, like eating, exercise, nap, brainstorm, reading. Each one of those examples could provide you with a creativity boost to help you on your project.

80-20 Rule
>
Crunch time.

You could spend an entire day writing a paper, or you can spend just a couple of hours writing the paper right before it is due. Either way, it's pretty much going to be the same quality. Except, with one method you will have more free time to do things you want to do. (Warning: This line of reasoning does not apply to all examples)

If I didn't procrastinate, then I wouldn't have been able to go to the beach, go rock climbing, or complete the development of another Android app. All last week. This is what I consider to be worthwhile and productive procrastination. I was procrastinating creating a speech about productive procrastination. It truly shows that I live by that word.

I've gotten quite a few unexpected job offers just because I am friends with many people. That never would have happened if I didn't hang out with anybody. Research agrees that most people are hired through recommendations and word-of-mouth rather than through job listings such as Monster.com.

Students with 4.0 GPAs don't necessarily do better in life than students who graduate with a 3.0 GPA.

Plan of Action.

The key to productive procrastination is to have a long list of things to accomplish and place something like "learn a language" at the very top. John Perry, philosophy professor at Stanford and author of "The Art of Procrastination", says "the trick is to put the right sorts of projects for the top of the list. The ideal sorts of things have two characteristics. First, they seem to have clear deadlines (but really don't). Second, they seem awfully important (but really aren't)."

The most productive people you know are putting something off.

So, START PROCRASTINATING TODAY!

ps - I'm currently working on a large programming project and using this as my little break. The more I put into it, ... I need to stop writing now.

Talking to Myself

We all talk to ourselves whether it is aloud or not.

Another word for "talking to yourself" is "thinking". When you are thinking, there is typically a conversation of whether or not something should be done or what should be said.

The only time you aren't talking to yourself is when you are strictly doing, which is a tough thing to do. Certain substances limit inhibitors. Which, in turn, arguably allows for more creativity. Free writing is also great practice in "strictly doing" aka creativity.

~ Simply Advanced ~

ps - My initial seed of an idea for this post was just "Talking to myself = Thinking from different perspectives." And, originally, that's all this post was going to say. I didn't want to talk about creativity in this post because I have a lot to say about it, but not enough time. Hence, the abrupt stop.
