I just finished reading an article introducing me to the idea that riding horses and "driving" self-driving cars are similar. I expand on that idea here and introduce practical applications of that knowledge, i.e, a fun way to promote the cars and showing them to be practical.
Basically, one example precedent for self-driving cars is the horse. When horse-back riding, you can either choose to (1) Do nothing, (2) Provide gentle directions (3) Strongly urge a direction. When the rider is doing nothing, the mode of transportation can instinctively go somewhere. When the rider provides directions, the mode of transportation will do them at the earliest convenience, typically immediately. But, the ride won't run into a wall or crash into other rides (a sensible default).
Armed with this knowledge, I think it would be a fun idea to make a video commercial about this. First, the ending to a spectacular action scene, then have a closeup of a cowboy (read: horseback rider) texting and riding. Then zoom out to show all the hard work that the horse has to do to keep the rider safe, like avoiding potholes and other horses. Then, zoom out again to show a parent and child enjoying watching that video inside the self-driving car that is doing the same things.
Random follow-up questions:
- Do we need to hardcode into the car to want to always safe itself from crashing or having a certain threshold or acceleration and deceleration?
- Should the cars think all objects are immovable solids to avoid, or should it use more computer vision (CV) to determine densities (and object types), just in case? Ex: Run into brick wall or bushes?

People play drums on car steering wheels, so why not play the guitar and piano too? It could just be a slip-on cover. Or a clasp for it, around a part of the wheel.

Aerodynamic Cars
Is a car with smooth sides the most aerodynamic it could be?
A golf ball has dimples for a reason. They already tried smooth spheres, but the ones with dimples floated longer and went farther more easily. [http://www.livescience.com/32446-why-do-golf-balls-have-dimples.html]
The newest track suits (I read about this at least a year ago) also have small dimples on it rather than being perfectly smooth in order to shave a few hundredths of a second off. [http://www.gizmag.com/nike-pro-turbospeed-golf-ball-track-uniform/22520/]
Update: I just did a search for "cars with dimples" and found that MythBusters already did this. Mythbuster results showed a 11% increase in MPG (miles per gallon). =D

Locks with timers for doors. They can only stay open for a car for a certain amount of time. Maybe have a permanent mode also.

Inertia Dampeners

First version would just be changing forward velocity to rotational energy. Or somehow, by moving forward, we could store a negative rotational energy. When stopping, apply a positive rotational energy and overall, not feel the effects of slowing down.
Most people who have heard of inertia dampeners may think of space ships in tv shows and movies. But, I want to apply inertia dampeners to vehicles here on Earth. For example, a car crash would be significantly less fatal if the effects of gravity and Newton's Laws of Motion weren't in play.
(I like to believe that technology and knowledge will eventually allow for great [current-]physics-law breaking.)

Interesting Origami - Mooser's Train
You may have seen intricate origami including cranes, insects, and other animals and figures. These are the most popular ones.
Today, I just learned about the OrigamiUSA convention held annually and about the great origami achievement known as Mooser's Train. Emmanuel Mooser created a three-car model locomotive from a single sheet of paper. It was folded with a method known as the box pleat, which has been used in many other real-world applications, such as air bags and transforming robots.
Mooser's Train just looks awesome. And after seeing it, possibilities are opened for even more intricate designs made with a single sheet of paper.
